Pakistan traveled through Iran turkey until arriving to Greece you've been

more than 20 years in Greece already so you are like a a local now um working here but uh also doing

photography and doing tours and we will talk a little bit more about that in the second part like this combination of

like having photography and guided tours in the city which I find really really interesting um but before we do that

let's talk about a little bit about you and your experience until arriving here

MH uh okay ER I started in 2001 in

September uh I decided to move uh in Europe it wasn't

uh uh final that I will I would stay here uh but it wasn't plan

that first I will come here so that was the the way we

started um it was a difficult Journey it was like uh illegal

immigrants uh only the first part was legal like in until Iran M I had Visa so
2:49
I went there legally there wasn't an issue but only for the first two three
2:56
nights afterwards we were moved to the Border area which is not
3:02
um uh legally uh allowed to go because you are
3:08
you went there for visiting the uh like uh Cals and tourist yes like a
3:17
tourist but not the Border area so I don't know if you want more details of it we will go into it no worries but so

basically you you you were born and raised in Pakistan how old were you when you
3:30
uh I was 22 22 okay yeah and then you just took the The Bravery to to to to
3:39
start the journey like like this without with the idea of coming to Greece specifically or with the idea of just
3:45
arriving to Europe anywh actually I got some friends here okay from my Village
3:51
so he told me that uh you should come he was having a good job so he asked me to

uh join him uh but uh the plan was never to stop somewhere it was maybe we go
4:08
France maybe we go other countries Spain or somewhere else but uh because it's
4:15
the Gateway of uh Europe so you have to come first here and then you have to see
4:22
how things will go but in my case I stayed forever here it was forever I
4:29
think well yeah it happens quite often like a lot of people thinks that they
4:35
are coming or going somewhere for like one two years and then they're staying the rest of their lives there yes um

well if you're comfortable here it's also nice no like over complicating it even more like I think no I don't I

don't complain about it I'm I'm very good and thank God I have settled down and I'm okay nice so you said you

started your journey through Iran like you traveled uh how how did you arrive to Iran till Iran we took a bus from

Pakistan there was a there's a bus service you can take bus from from the

central area of Pakistan till I I mean you almost you across the whole Pakistan

to go on the other side okay where where I was born till the Border area of Iran

uh then we stayed One Night in tan and then they took us uh
5:30
uh with the some passes hidden in the bagat area and took us to the Border
5:37
area where we stayed for almost 25 days oh wow yeah in uh in a
5:46
village not a village like there is only two three houses on the border there's
5:51
nothing else uh in um in a with their cattles m because we

are more than 40 person okay we are staying like they they have uh separate
6:08
the half area from their cattles their cows their okay other animal yes animals
6:16
and a half area for us but I mean with with the Flor yeah yeah yeah H they feed
6:24
us twice a day I mean in the morning and in the evening we weren't allowed to go
6:31
out uh only during the night time when during the daylight we weren't allowed
6:37
to go out we had to stay in because uh it was on Mountain we can't be seen from
6:43
everywhere so it was dangerous to find out that they are hiding some people through across the
6:49
border uh we tried from there uh after
6:56
almost 25 days we tried to cross to cross a border with one guide from there

uh but it went it didn't went well we have
7:09
to again come back my foot was

uh when we when we are going to across border we went with the car like uh like
7:22
the car I I don't know how to say like the open car from behind this kind of
7:28
like like a truck yes like yes like agricultural truck uh without lights without anything

they have to drive because it's the bar area so it can't be seen in the night when the car is moving in the area so

they have to drive without lights without everything uh but uh from when when they
7:50
they let us in area and they asked now we have to walk for half an hour and we will cross the border but it never
7:57
happens because uh there wasn't some fires so we have to come back maybe they
8:05
hasn't the person who who they have talked okay already so we have to come
8:11
back so basically after this 25 days for example someone comes and says okay

today tonight is the night like it comes like exactly exactly and we have to walk all night

and we have to come back we have to stay more for a week so the trip that you did

by car on the way there yeah you did it back by by yes because there is no car again to come back okay uh we stay

almost again a week then it start snowing because because because it was before it wasn't there wasn't
8:45
snow and it was the first time when I saw snow in my life okay well that was
8:52
very maybe not the best timeing no but it I mean I was 22 so it was everything

was beautiful for me uh in the morning we start playing with the snow outside

and when they s they has must they come get in get in get in you not allowed to

be out uh anyway we stayed and almost a week and then again we did another night

we tried to cross the border again with the guide uh but this time uh there was

very uh there was a snow everywhere like my knees have to so until here

yeah uh we have to walk uh without stopping because the guy told us there
9:41
was three three of them they told us that uh uh we won't stop so you have to
9:47
follow us if you stop you are on your own because they they they have time
9:53
limits to cross the border okay so we have to follow them they always telling us that uh there will be a car which

will be picking us up soon but there wasn't any so we we keep going almost
10:08
for we started at 11:00 in the night and we arrive at a place on the other side in
10:17
Turkey uh next day at uh 11 in the morning so it's a 12 hours Journey

nonstop yes with snow until here yes without water without anything because

the water we had we got some bottle of water on us but was freezed okay we
10:37
don't have food we didn't have anything uh we have some we were almost 200

people who are walking oh gosh all the way okay uh we had some because um when
10:50
we started from Pakistan we had some guys with us I mean we we wasn't we we were we weren't friends but we know each

other we started with the one person we have talk before so we know that we are a group so we know almost four or five

peoples everyone like this because you are doing the same route and the same Journey yeah uh so we yes we took care
11:11
of each other we were trying but there were some guys when we arrive on the
11:18
other side uh only two person one was me
11:24
and another one was able to walk was able to
11:29
eat with their hand or go to toilet because their hands and their foots were like swollen totally frozen I suppose

because you didn't have any boots or any equipment for work they haven't they haven't uh so we helped them
11:45
to to go to eat to go toilet or anything all of these
11:50
things uh then we stayed for a week there almost uh on that house then they
11:58
took us with the some ambulances they put us in ambulances it

was a trick I mean they start like ambulances but we were inside there wasn't any patient so there was multiple
12:11
people on an ambulance and then putting they were just to to to move deceive the
12:17
people to deceive the police and these things anyways we we went to the next
12:23
place where we stayed one night and then they took us in a truck a big truck
12:31
which was uh divided with half they had Furniture in behind they had a fake
12:39
background that they and we were almost 45 person inside we didn't have the
12:46
place to sit or anything we were just standing it was very cold it was almost
12:53
December uh it was uh snowing outside everything

uh anyways we had almost 12 hours from there and we arrive somewhere in uh near
13:11
Istanbul from there they bring some buses and put us in the luggage area and
13:17
because they can't send uh have us sitting like seats everything and we
13:24
arrived in the city uh where there is there was a
13:29
like uh bakery store but that bakery store had a behind door I mean you there
13:37
is always a behind something and you go upstair to an apartment okay so when we
13:44
arrived there we were there almost 100 people upstairs living in that apartment
13:51
I mean there wasn't uh beds and anything just you there was cleans there was I
13:58
mean carpets carpets and you just went sleep there and there was only two
14:03
toilets for all of these people anyways we we stayed there
14:09
almost uh more than 15 days uh and because I I had a bug I I
14:19
want to see whever I I want to travel I want to see the area so I asked them do I want to see the area I want to visit

the because we are staying here so I want to know to fit uh they allowed me okay uh only
14:34
because the the only thing was allowed is that if you if someone send you money
14:41
you have to go on your own you have to go in person to the bank to collect that money okay so I had as I said in
14:51
beginning that I had friend here so I told him that please send me some money
14:56
I wasn't in need of money but I want to go to visit so he sent me some money and

I went you use it as excuse to go to the bank so they followed me I mean there was one person from these guys he
15:10
followed me maybe he accompanied me to go to the bank because I don't know where the B is
15:17
so he took me there uh we we took the money and as we were
15:26
coming from out from the bank there were to guys who put handcuffs on us decided we
15:33
are police they wasn't wearing anything like
15:39
and he I I wasn't in um in position to do
15:46
anything I just give my hand he handcuffed me and I was like this I
15:51
don't know where I am I don't know where to run but the other guy he start running okay uh but they got him in two
15:59
blocks he come back and he told me in my language that they they want money they
16:05
don't want to to arrest you arrest us they just want money and because I I I
16:12
had a very difficult Journey behind so I tell him that tell them that I had M I have money in my pocket there is a
16:19
wallet and tell them in Turkish that you can take all the money and uh just let
16:26
us go please so they took us Us in the area in a park they took all the money
16:34
from my wallet uh but only the Turkish money they didn't took they didn't took the
16:40
dollars or Euros we had okay it was strange yes but uh yes they did okay and
16:49
they let us go so that was the first tour in Turkey I was in uh the famous
16:58
area have you been there in in Turkey yeah in istan so it was in taxim these
17:05
areas so this was the first I took taxi and I go back straight on the place the
17:10
way stain yeah and these guys that you say it's also like do you how much do
17:16
you know of the journey that you are taking like because you I suppose you contact some someone in Pakistan saying
17:23
okay we want to do this you need to organize somehow all the trip how much
17:28
do you know on where do you will stay where would how which route will you take actually I I I
17:35
would like to put some light on this because this area is not very clear for
17:40
everyone yeah because um these guys when they talk to you and
17:47
they try to have you in this trip they told you that we have everything in
17:52
control in Pakistan or in every every country like when they try to we have
17:57
our businesses we have have uh our friends we will not have any difficulties we have connections with

the police border everything so you don't have to worry anything they will tell you all these things and you have
18:10
to give us like then it was like 5,000

Euro the money they took from me uh you have to pay half and half when you
18:23
arrive there but the thing is that that person you have talked and you have
18:30
given your money he only knows the next person okay that's what I meant I mean
18:38
he told me to go to the next city in Pakistan it's not even outside from
18:45
Pakistan he told me go to that person and tell him that I'm sending you and he he knows what to do so we did
18:54
that and when we go to that person he tolds me that took the bus go to Iran
18:59
and there will be a person named like this and he will pick you up and he

knows what to do the person who was in Iran he don't know about the first
19:10
person I have gave money so it's like always always one step ahead but behind
19:17
person there's there's no information of that's why they are they are
19:22
covered it's like they cover they backfire each other like no they put
19:27
this wall it's a little bit like it only can follow two persons of the whole thing the first person will follow up

and uh try to find his money and he will ask when you arrived here but during the
19:43
time nobody knows him they told us no we don't know him
19:49
okay you are here you are on us and we know the person right before you come
19:55
here only this so that's the work that that that's the how they work all the

system and they tell you just the next step probably like when you when you talk with the guy in Pakistan they told

you okay you need to go to this guy you didn't know you were going through turkey you didn't know we knew that we
20:13
knew that we we will uh pass from Iran turkey and everything but uh very very
20:20
beautiful way I mean you will go to Iran there will be a bus that will took you
20:26
to the turkey and from Turkey there will ship that will take you to gree Greece
20:32
that's that's it but during that time what you will face and what you will
20:38
have to do there's no information of it and because when you arrive here and you
20:43
have uh finish that uh journey and you left it
20:48
behind uh you see things are going well you are having work and you are having
20:55
better life than before so you forgot that and no nobody when I when I when you told to other peoples who are living

in Pakistan your fellow guys your friends your brothers or cousins they
21:08
don't believe you because they will see what you are now no yeah what you have done before nobody is matter for them

yeah it's a mid of mid of like it doesn't really matter no like you were there and you achieve it and now you
21:22
have a good life and that's it like yeah yeah exactly I see so when we are were
21:29
in um in that place in Istanbul then they took again us with that truck with
21:36
furniture and bring us somewhere in ismir which is
21:41
uh near the sea the coast yeah Coastline we from there they put us in a ship
21:49
which was very small A boat like I could say with the fishing
21:54
boat uh we were on the boat almost 200 9

people it was like uh very small
22:05
one we we aborted that boat in the
22:12
night and during the whole night they were telling us that Coast card is uh
22:20
behind them so they have lost uh the time and uh the appointment
22:28
where they had so we are very close to the Italy neither to the Greece that's
22:34
what they were telling us M it wasn't true okay

uh then they told us that uh because our ship has been nned to the Coast Guard
22:48
and they were behind us and they now they uh have the information of our ship so we have to uh disembark you here on a
22:57
small island and then we will bring another boat to take you back because uh it's not
23:05
possible to go with this boat because this boat has been marked by coost
23:10
guard uh I personally I was not in position to even talk because I was very
23:17
it was my first time uh in the sea my first time in the boat in my life
23:25
ever uh it was very cold was uh 28th

December so you can imagine how cold it was uh we were on Deck the deck means it
23:38
was so close to the sea I mean uh when it was like uh wng we can touch the
23:46
water it was so smooth so you can imagine how we were and so many people on top of
23:52
it yeah yeah there were kids also families inside and uh anyway he tried

to uh approach a small it can't be can be say said the an
24:09
island just some rock yeah uh but it
24:14
wasn't possible because it was you can imagine in December how SE could be so

he he took us from there he he moved the boat to another place and he he pushed
24:29
very hard the the boat power to approach another rock but in my opinion because
24:38
they don't use the equipments and anything the radar and everything they Swit off everything he didn't saw there

was a rock under the water and he done like this tap to the boat and we start
24:53
hearing the water getting in the water yes so we I said to my friends which
24:59
were close to me the people who I knew knew that I think we are going to sing

We have to jump thank God that the boat was stuck for almost 5 minutes 6 minutes

to that until it get water inside and we jumped okay almost everyone there wasn't
25:24
no no life has been lost lost in that opion we jumped on the Rock along with
25:33
the guys who are driving were the captains and everything the crew uh and I I remember that when
25:42
I when I C my conscience and I saw behind there wasn't any boat only one
25:50
blue drum of oil everything was G inside W okay that was very very
25:59
I mean this uh picture I can't forget of

course not uh anyways then uh these guys the

guys come with you like the the people who are there is someone driving the boat like it's a motorized boat and they
26:18
are they three three or four crew members okay they they have to jump also because they don't have other choice

yeah yeah so they hide somewhere in the in the that Island uh I found out later
26:31
that what is the name of that Island because then I didn't know then then I did my research when I got here and I
26:39
got internet and everything and I got some newspapers from them and I find
26:45
it's it's a place name is Ura Ura yeah it's near um scopos MH and in these
26:52
areas I mean uh and uh then they connected to the
27:00
Coast Guard and Coast Guard GES with the some other boats and they talk to us
27:06
they told us that we are from Greece uh they asked us for if someone
27:12
lost his life we told them that we are all okay okay they will they told us
27:17
that they will bring some boats and they will take us okay then they took us into
27:22
all of them to Volos Volos yeah it's because it's the nearest place I think
27:29
from there uh we had good treatment I can say
27:36
that uh we they took us to a basketball Club M there was a black Hall like there
27:46
when we arrived there it was almost 4 Hour Journey from there four to four
27:51
three to four hours and when we arrived we we found there for all of us m
27:59
messes cloths fresh food they told us to take bath and
28:06
change your address and they have doctors they provide us almost everything and there was coast guards
28:12
from Greece it was not it was not was coard directly it was
28:18
Coast Guard and uh I think the the foods everything they must be provided by ngos
28:27
and maybe some church trust like this things okay uh we stayed there
28:35
till uh January 22 at that place okay there wasn't uh
28:43
negotiations they wanted to deport us because it was uh as I said it was in
28:50
December 2001 yeah and they wanted to because it
28:57
was a almost the one of the first big batch of immigrants that
29:03
arrived together okay uh but there were some Nos and some um
29:11
students organizations which I found up information about them later
29:17
on they helps they did some strikes and these things that these are refugees
29:24
they don't shouldn't be departed and things so things Chang
29:31
and they gave us uh status of Asylum

Seekers and we had a six months validation of a residence
29:44
perment and uh they let us uh in a like camps like refugee camps
29:53
in a village near Lama M but we didn't stay there I mean when we arrived they

let they took us with the bus and they let us there and they told us you have to stay
30:07
here uh but when we arrive there we ask them the administrations there and we
30:14
asked them if we if we are I mean we have to stay there he told us you are free to go you no are not prisoners yeah

you are not prisoners you are staying because you don't have to go somewhere if you have you can go because I had
30:28
friends so the same night we took a c from there and we come
30:35
here long distance lamia lamia Athens is not close also like yeah we took I mean
30:41
we paid 400 euros I think and we were four person in the car and

we the strange thing is at that I I first came uh in this neighborhood oh
30:57
really you live now again yeah I mean it's only only two block blocks from here where we we the taxi brings us

because the my friends was living in that area so that's the

almost as you say for the journey how was it wow yeah long no I mean longer for

you that was like September 2001 until the January 2002

that you arve here in Athens yes so it's like a lot of

months three four five months almost yes thank God I can say that that U yes the
31:41
journey was difficult um I mean the circumstances were but in general uh I
31:50
find found good persons during all the time I mean in yes in
31:59
the people who are handling us uh yes they have their job I mean

they're their job they they are doing the their part yes but generally I can say that uh

it was good so you were not treated well neither treated very bad let's say like
32:20
this like okay and do you remember because you said you have your group of people from Pakistan

that it was people that either you met there or you met through the through the way in Iran or in Turkey um you remember
32:36
other nationalities that were there like yes I do so forget to mention that in um
32:43
when we arrived in Istanbul some of my fellow guys who were with me and who I
32:50
knew from the beginning of my journey uh two of them have lost their legs due
32:58
to the snow two thighs one of them has lost their
33:04
fingers and another one lot of fingers his foot due to the walking in the in the
33:10
snow in the first second cross yeah uh from uh from
33:17
the ship yes we were uh what what happened when you lose a leg when when
33:23
you when you lose I mean I suppose fingers in the hand it's the guys who lost their fingers they
33:31
were they right here but the guys who lost their legs they went back by I mean
33:38
they go to the police and they they deport them in from Turkey yes because
33:44
they need hospitalization some point yeah he has to go hospital because I
33:49
mean losing fingers theorically you also should go to the hospital but uh yeah but it's it's uh doable okay somehow yes

I don't know because I'm not the person yeah thank God I had good shoes maybe

good clothes so I think that's the reason I don't know yeah but at the same
34:11
time is what you were saying you you're they putting it so nice so beautiful for you that what do you bring like uh if it
34:19
was the first time that you saw snow in your life you don't have snow clothes anyway no so yes same with the boat same

with the sh chips like okay what are you wearing yeah and they they don't let us have when they put us in boat I remember

that they told us throw everything you had you can take only one uh je okay and
34:44
uh one shirt if you have more because we had some shoes some you can't take
34:51
anything extra because they want to put 209 people inside they don't want have our Lage from the people that you
34:57
traveled with you still maintain the the connection with unfortunately almost no one because um

from in the boat we had peoples from Morocco we had from Iraq some Chinese
35:15
guys it was very strange then it's in 2001 it's I mean it's not like China is
35:22
not like now in 2001 they they had the issues they couldn't leave the country
35:29
like this so we had Chinese we had peoples from
35:35
uh Africa I don't know how it happens they were in Istanbul and they were
35:41
moving here and lot of people from Iraq Syria all these but when almost we were
35:51
half Pakistani okay some Bangladesh also like this what about communication
35:56
because these guys that drive the boats or that they bring you like they speak Turkish I suppose

the the on in Turkey but they speak they don't speak to us oh okay they are they
36:11
just give orders get in get out or stay there or only this they don't they they
36:17
have a mission they know somewhere to go and we know we are in their hands we
36:23
don't have conversation but even the orders they do it in Turkish so you need to
36:29
yeah they you learned we were we were in almost 25 days in Istanbul so you know
36:37
the same orders yeah you know the basics so and uh some of them they said some
36:43
words in English so you can have it when you arrive here with the Salem
36:50
what what's the process because you said okay you had a three month six months uh residence permit through Asylum
36:58
because luy you also were one of the first ones before they treated it I think
37:04
afterwards in the next years it wasn't it wasn't like that and it's not like that now because they are we are having
37:12
lot of refugees no it's not the same yeah uh the when when we arrived here in
37:19
Athens uh I had the bug as I said before I started uh
37:28
uh going around in the city I what was my habit it was that I took
37:36
a monthly bus card MH uh and I took every day a new bus
37:44
okay I don't know I don't it doesn't matter where where it goes okay I wanted to see the city so I took one a bus from
37:50
here and go to the very tense and then take back to the home so I know oh the
37:57
same bus will bring me where I'm starting and once I was um on the bus just luckily I was
38:07
passing from um the police headquarter which is in Alexandria so I was uh I saw a lot of
38:16
people are waiting there in the line so I stopped and I asked they told me that
38:22
here you can renew your residence permit it was just P luck yeah I didn't know
38:29
about the process I didn't know anything I just go forward and I talk to the
38:34
policeman I asked him uh in English I wasn't able to speak Greek so I asked
38:40
him and he told me that uh you have must have an address here in city and you can
38:47
come here and you can renew when it's going to be expired so I found it and I go every six
38:55
months there that was a process for the residence department for the job
39:01
purpose uh I had uh only with an address you
39:06
could renew the the residence permit no this only this residence permit ah okay
39:12
the six months in Asylum yes when you are Asylum Seeker you have some perks I
39:19
mean you are not like other residents uh because it it means that
39:24
it's a it's a temporary res expent and you are in process until you got the
39:29
final decision which is now taken very quickly okay and and that time it was it
39:35
took two and a half year for me okay so you could renovate this uh six months
39:41
every for these two and a half years yes because they don't have see so they have
39:46
to give you rest but you must have an address okay cuz they don't they can't
39:54
give you when you don't don't know where are you staying so that was the only and you
39:59
were staying with your friends I was staying with my friend yes I had uh the
40:05
luck that I wasn't uh I mean I was a little bit
40:13
uh I I could easily do things without sending money behind Okay because my
40:20
father was also working still working so I had the chance to visit the area to
40:29
find the job to I mean I I was easy I wasn't I I didn't have difficulties yeah

have the pressure of needing to send money back home yes and the money which
40:41
I paid to come here I had paid already so I don't have someone to push me to
40:48
work or okay so I I was easy so you didn't have a credit or someone like
40:54
like this and workwise how how did you find work like how how is the for the
41:00
work um so I started uh my first job was

uh at a place where there are some swing something mhm like swing machines and
41:14
these things I started with a friend there
41:20
and luckily the person who was the owner of that place was very good he's very
41:26
good he's still good uh he start talking me in Greek he
41:33
learning me some words and uh I told him that I want to learn Greek so he find uh
41:41
some places some institutes where I could I go and he helps
41:48
me uh a lot and he found the no first I found a place uh and
41:57
organization which is uh NGO M it still exists it's uh GCR MH Greek Council for

refugees uh they had some free lessons Okay for uh
42:13
refugees uh and the most of the teachers
42:18
were uh volunteers students mostly this so I
42:24
went there for basic for some basic Greek language but unfortunately they have to stop because they the lessons

concerts uh which was very good for me to see how things are working in

work in the night with him and on the daytime I have to go to the office so
